Lets say i am measuring temperature. Should I use wireless network b/g to fetch the data from sensor. I think that will be too much work.
I think the best way is to create a proprietary system the sensor sends data using RF (with certain security), it is then picked by the receiver which is interfaced with the PC The benefit is, the sensor can be placed far from PC and it will not be that hard to implement.
What do you think is the best way to do it? Can i use PCI card? What is available in the market. Thanks

It all depends on your application and environment. Where will you be measuring the temperature? For what purpose? What type of temperature sensor are you planning to use?
Probably the easiest way of getting a temperature signal (relatively slow changing analog signal) into a PC would be to use a USB data acquisition module. There are lots of them available:

There are PCI cards too.
Wireless solutions work well in cases with lots of sensors, and in areas where running cables is problematic.
